Reputational Bargaining with Ultimatum Opportunities

چکیده

We study two-sided reputational bargaining with opportunities to issue an ultimatum -- threats force dispute resolution. Each player is either a justified type, who never concedes and issues whenever opportunity arrives, or unjustified can concede, wait, bluff ultimatum. In equilibrium, the presence of harm benefit by decelerating accelerating reputation building. When only one ultimatum, equilibrium play unique. The hazard rate resolution discontinuous piecewise monotonic in time. As probabilities being vanish, agreement immediate efficient, if set justifiable demands rich, payoffs modify Abreu Gul (2000), discount replaced arrival former smaller. both players' arrive sufficiently fast, there may exist multiple equilibria which their reputations do not build up negotiation lasts forever.

Repeated reputational bargaining with deadlines

We develop a two-sided reputational bargaining model with deadlines, and analyze the implications of linking a reputation for commitment on one bargaining issue, to reputation on future issues. The model is adapted from that of Abreu and Gul [2000], where some agents are committed to achieving a fixed share of any surplus available. Among the conclusions drawn are: the ordering of issues on the...

Reputational bargaining and deadlines

How will agents behave when bargaining in the face of an upcoming deadline? If irrational types exist, committed to their bargaining positions, rational agents will imitate this tough behavior to gain reputational benefits, even though this may result in the deadline being missed. Notably, if agents are patient and irrational types are committed to fixed demands then agreement must necessarily ...

Reputational bargaining and deadlines

I introduce irrational types, who are committed to their demands, into a bargaining model with an uncertain deadline for agreement. Rational agents imitate these demands, hoping to benefit from a “tough” reputation. When irrational types are committed to fixed demands and agents are patient, this provides an explanation for “deadline effects” in bargaining: agreement is “U-shaped”, occurring ei...

Reputational Bargaining with Minimal Knowledge of Rationality∗

Two players announce bargaining postures to which they may become committed and then bargain over the division of a surplus. The share of the surplus that a player can guarantee herself under first-order knowledge of rationality is determined (as a function of her probability of becoming committed), as is the bargaining posture that she must announce in order to guarantee herself this much. Thi...

Social Comparisons in Ultimatum Bargaining*

Experiments are used to examine the effects of social comparisons in ultimatum bargaining. We inform responders about the average offer before they decide whether to accept or reject their specific offer. This significantly increases offers and offer-specific rejection probabilities. For comparison, we consider another change in informational conditions: telling responders the total pie is $30—...
